Redefine Sustainability is an Initiative of the Environmental Education Fund (EEF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit which provides encouragement, mentoring, film viewing rights and speakers for individuals and organizations to hold engaging multimedia environmental events and programs.
Mission:
The mission of EEF's Redefine Sustainability program is to build on university campuses a movement that can protect, preserve, and regenerate nature. We offer the college community support and resources to bring about genuine change. This change begins with a change in thinking.
We are living with the destructive effects of a human-centric perspective of the planet we live on and share with all living things as a storehouse of resources existing to satisfy our wants. That thinking deprives us of the ability to experience a deep connection with all living creatures and and to realize that each of them has its own purpose and role that must be respected. Ultimately, it has caused us to forget what many of our indigenous ancestors knew--how to play a harmonious role within the delicate web of life.
This fallacious thinking has also influenced the current definition of sustainability as a strategy for managing finite resources for our continued use and benefit instead of as a responsibility, deeply felt, to protect the Earth, our home – and thereby save ourselves and the family of all living beings to which we belong and on which our lives depend. Redefine Sustainability calls for reclaiming our ability to live in harmony with nature. Here, in our view, lies the heart of our search for meaning as human beings in this century. Here is the path to reclaiming our humanity, protecting our shared future, and knowing the joy and wisdom of a full heart.
