The Campaign
The current definition of Sustainability, does not recognize Nature's intrinsic value or worth beyond its usefulness to humans. It fails to recognize that we are part of Nature, not its owners or masters. It fails to recognize that we depend upon the natural world for the air we breathe, water we drink and food we eat. Its physical and spiritual value to us are immeasurable. We cannot continue to live well, or perhaps even continue to live at all, unless we learn new ways of sustaining the natural world. The campaign to live better by living in harmony with Nature begins with the simple act of redefining one word: "Sustainability."
This is a simple change and very doable for colleges because it is:
- No cost
- Non-controversial,
- Brings positive press to your campus
Work with Us - Become an Ambassador for Sustainability in Harmony with Nature!
Help bring about a new relationship with nature, one that emphasizes our interconnectedness and even our kinship with the natural world. A new relationship that can prioritize the love and preservation of nature. Lead your college to being on the vanguard of social change. There is no true sustainability while we are destroying the basis of life that we all depend upon.
We will mentor you, introduce you to others working to redefine sustainability, and provide you the training and all the tools you need. Sign up to attend a one-on-one discussion to get started and to receive our tool kit which includes talking points for meetings, as well as materials that can be used in training sessions, curriculum, websites, sustainability reports, and events.

How to Redefine Sustainability at Your School
- Attend a training session.
- Speak to students and clubs, student government, faculty and staff who are likely to be supportive about the movement to redefine sustainability.
- Working with others, approach the appropriate people about incorporating the new definition into college websites.
- Ask faculty to incorporate concepts about the impacts of our human-centric thinking about sustainability on our own well-being and the rest of the planet.
- Work with the Environmental Club and other groups to hold events and information sessions.
The 1987 definition of sustainability, "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," must be replaced. It has elevated humankind over the natural world. By treating nature as a commodity humans have caused widespread catastrophic crises such as climate change, water pollution and depletion, and extinction. We are living at a pivotal time in human history when survival of multiple species on the planet, including our own, is in danger.
We know you care about your future and that of the planet you live on. Ideas and movements that begin on campuses spread outward, across societies, changing norms, beliefs, social programs, laws, governments, and how entire cultures live and interact. Words are powerful – they can be used to create or destroy. If we change the definition of sustainability, people will start thinking about it differently. It is time to harness the energy of a college movement to better face and solve the challenges of today’s world AND YOUR FUTURE.
In order to do so effectively we must revamp the concept of sustainability. It is time to place a higher priority on nature. Around the world students and other young people are leading the way in promoting Earth stewardship and a better understanding of our relationship with and dependency upon the natural world. You can lead the way in building a thriving world for your future, your children’s future. We will teach you and give you the tools to include your campus in this essential movement.
